UDISE+ is one of the world’s largest Management Information Systems (MIS) on school education.

• It is managed by the Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education.
• It was developed with the technical support of the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
• It covers recognised schools across the school-education spectrum, from foundational/primary to higher secondary levels.
• It covers approximately 14.7 lakh schools, 1 crore+ teachers and ~25 crore students.

Evolution & Digital Upgradation

• Launched in 2018–19, UDISE+ transformed the earlier UDISE system from a largely manual/paper-based data-entry system into an online digital database.
• It has increasingly shifted towards individual student-wise data collection, enabling more accurate monitoring of students.
• Permanent Education Number (PEN) provides a unique identification mechanism for students and facilitates student tracking and identification of duplicate enrolments.
• UDISE+ data supports monitoring of enrolment, retention, dropout and transition of students.
• It captures indicators aligned with NEP 2020, including foundational learning, digital facilities, inclusion and other aspects of school education.

School Infrastructure & Digital Connectivity — UDISE+ 2025–26

• Drinking water: available in more than 99.5% of schools.
• Functional separate toilets for girls: around 98.5%.
• Electrification: around 95% of schools.
• Computer facilities: available in 69.9% of schools.
• Internet connectivity: available in 67.4% of schools.
• Library facilities: available in around 90.5% of schools.
• Ramps with handrails for CWSN (Children with Special Needs): available in 58.2% of schools.
• These indicators cover basic amenities, digital infrastructure and inclusive education facilities.

Policy Evaluation & Governance Significance

• UDISE+ serves as an important data backbone for evidence-based planning, monitoring and resource allocation in school education.
• Its data feeds into the Performance Grading Index (PGI) for assessing the performance of States and UTs in school education.
