- Wind energy is a renewable, non-conventional source of energy generated by converting the kinetic energy of wind into electricity.
- India is the 4th largest country globally in installed wind power capacity.
- Installed wind capacity (30 June 2026): 57.44 GW.
- The Government aims to achieve 100 GW of installed wind power capacity by 2030, 156 GW by 2036, 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity by 2030, and Net Zero emissions by 2070.

- 695.5 GW at 120 m hub height
- 1,163.9 GW at 150 m hub height
- NIWE has installed 900+ wind monitoring stations across India.

Recent Government Initiatives
- National Wind–Solar Hybrid Policy (2018): Promotes hybrid wind-solar projects for better land and grid utilization.
- National Repowering & Life Extension Policy (2023): Replaces old wind turbines with modern, high-capacity turbines to increase power generation.
- Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme: Financial support for 1 GW offshore wind projects (500 MW each in Gujarat & Tamil Nadu).
- Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO): Mandates electricity distribution companies and certain consumers to procure a specified share of power from renewable sources, including wind.
- Green Energy Corridor (GEC): Develops transmission infrastructure to evacuate and integrate wind and other renewable power into the national grid.
