Core Objectives
- Green Technology & Innovation: Formally elevated bilateral and regional ties to a trusted Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership. Trade & Economic Integration: Leverage the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) (which came into force) and push for USD 100 billion in investments to generate jobs.
- Emerging Technologies: Expand cooperation in 6G innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), space technology, and STEM research.
- Maritime & Blue Economy: Promote sustainable shipping, low-carbon shipping transformations, and safe ship-recycling standards under the Hong Kong Convention.
- Geopolitics & Arctic Policy: Coordinate policies in the Arctic region, where melting ice impacts global weather patterns, monsoons, and India’s maritime security.
- Global Governance: Align on multilateralism, a rules-based international order, and Nordic support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council and the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
Why is the summit important for India?
- Energy security: Access to Nordic expertise in renewable energy, offshore wind and green hydrogen can help India’s energy transition.
- Economic growth: More trade, investment and technology transfer can support Indian manufacturing and employment.
- Climate action: Cooperation can advance decarbonisation, sustainable cities and environmental protection.
- Strategic diversification: Stronger ties with Northern Europe broaden India’s international partnerships.
- Indo-Pacific and maritime interests: Nordic capabilities can complement India’s maritime connectivity and ocean-economy initiatives.
- Research and skills: Partnerships can create opportunities for Indian universities, startups, scientists and skilled workers.
Key Challenges
- Divergent Geopolitical Perspectives: While united on democratic principles and free trade, India and Nordic nations do not always share identical stances on every global conflict or regional security issue.
- Implementation Gap: Translating high-level political declarations and trade framework agreements (like TEPA) into on-the-ground corporate footprints, smooth regulatory clearances, and scaled investments across diverse sectors.
- Climate vs. Growth Trade-offs: Balancing rapid industrial and infrastructure expansion in India with aggressive green-transition targets and climate standards favored by Nordic economies.
- Arctic Complexities: Navigating complex geopolitical tensions and environmental degradation in the Arctic while maintaining cooperative research and observer roles.
Way Forward
- Deepening Business & Defense Links: Utilizing 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) opportunities in defense collaboration and expanding the presence of Nordic firms operating in India.
- Talent & Academic Mobility: Fostering greater exchange and enhanced mobility for students, researchers, and technical professionals between India and the Nordic bloc.
- Next Summit Host: Finland is set to host the next India-Nordic Summit to build upon the momentum generated in Oslo.
The India–Nordic Summit elevated India’s relationship with the five Nordic countries into a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership, with emphasis on sustainable growth, trade, technology and international cooperation.
