National Senior Citizens Day
National Senior Citizens Day, observed on August 21st, recognises the contributions and presence of older adults. Globally, the 60+ population is projected to double from 1 billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, nearly 22% of the world population. In India, the elderly population is expected to reach over 300 million (nearly 20%) by 2050.
Problems Faced by Senior Citizens
- Health and Physical Decline: Age-related decline causes chronic diseases, reduced mobility, and dependence on costly medical care.
- Ex: A senior with osteoarthritis and diabetes needs regular medicines and assisted care.
- Financial Insecurity: Post-retirement income loss, inadequate pensions, and inflation create financial dependence.
- Ex: A retired private-sector worker without a pension struggles with living and medical expenses.
- Social Isolation and Loneliness: Nuclear families, migration, and urbanisation can leave seniors isolated, affecting mental well-being.
- Ex: An elderly parent living alone after children migrate abroad faces loneliness.
- Elder Abuse and Neglect: Seniors may face physical, emotional, verbal, or financial exploitation.
- Ex: Relatives coercing an elderly person to transfer property or savings.
- Inaccessible Infrastructure and Digital Exclusion: Poorly designed infrastructure and rapid digitisation can restrict access to services.
- Ex: A senior unable to book appointments online or use transport stations without elevators.
Schemes and Initiatives
- Ayushman Bharat – PM-JAY (India): Provides health insurance up to ₹5 lakh per family per year, extended to all senior citizens aged 70+ irrespective of income.

- Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana – AVYAY (India): Supports old-age homes, resource centres, and active ageing through financial assistance.
- Ex: Grants to NGOs running shelter and healthcare facilities for seniors.

- Universal Social Security: Expand pensions, health insurance, and financial support for economic security.
- Ex: Providing inflation-adjusted pensions to low-income senior citizens.
- Community Engagement and Social Integration: Promote daycare centres, senior hubs, and intergenerational programmes.
- Ex: Youth volunteers conducting technology and recreational activities with seniors.
- Legal Enforcement and Protection: Strengthen elderly protection laws, Maintenance Tribunals, and helplines.
- Ex: Fast-tracking cases involving neglected parents and property rights.
- Age-Friendly Infrastructure and Digital Inclusion: Provide accessible public spaces and digital literacy programmes.
- Ex: Low-floor buses and smartphone training for senior citizens.
Addressing senior citizens’ challenges requires coordinated health, social security, legal, and infrastructural measures. Combining social protection with age-friendly environments and family support can ensure security, dignity, and social inclusion in old age.
