Sir M. Visvesvaraya
- Sir M. Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli (present-day Karnataka). His ancestral roots trace back to Mokshagundam in Andhra Pradesh.
- He completed his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from the University of Madras and pursued civil engineering at the College of Science, Pune.
- His birthday is celebrated annually in India as Engineers’ Day on September 15. He is known as the “Father of Modern Mysore” and a visionary nation-builder.
Engineering Contributions
- Block Irrigation System: Introduced the block system of irrigation to extend irrigation benefits to several villages.
- Automatic Floodgates: Developed and patented automatic weir floodgates, first installed at Khadakvasla Reservoir near Pune in 1903.
- Water Management: Worked on water-supply and drainage projects, including in Aden (present-day Yemen).
- Flood Protection: Contributed to flood-control measures in Hyderabad after the Musi River floods of 1908.
- Krishna Raja Sagara Dam: Played a major role in the development of the dam across the Cauvery River, supporting irrigation and water supply.
Administrative Contributions
- Dewan of Mysore (1912–1918): Served as the Dewan of Mysore and promoted industrial, educational, and infrastructural development.
- Industrial Development: Encouraged the establishment of industries such as the Mysore Soap Factory and the Iron and Steel Works at Bhadravati.
