A Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign or indication used on products that originate from a definite geographical territory. It is used to identify agricultural, natural, or manufactured goods which have a special quality, reputation, or other characteristics essentially attributable to their origin.
For manufactured goods, the production, processing, or preparation should take place in that geographical area.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF GI TAGS?
- To protect the identity and authenticity of products tied to their origin.
- To prevent misuse or imitation by unauthorized producers.
- To recognize and reward traditional knowledge, craftsmanship, and local heritage.

- Legal protection to GI products in India and abroad.
- Prevents unauthorized use of a registered GI by others.
- Enhances marketability and export potential of traditional products.
- Promotes rural and artisan-based livelihoods.
LEGAL FRAMEWORK:
- The Geographical Indications (GI) in India are governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, which came into force on 15 September 2003.
- The Act provides a comprehensive legal framework for the registration and protection of products that originate from a specific geographical region and possess unique qualities, reputation, or characteristics attributable to that origin.
- The system is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM), functioning under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
WHO CAN APPLY?
- Any association of persons, producers, or organization/authority established by or under law can apply on behalf of the producers.
VALIDITY AND RENEWAL:
- Validity: 10 years from the date of registration.
- Renewal: Can be renewed indefinitely for further periods of 10 years each.
EXAMPLES:
- Agricultural Products: Nagpur Orange, Darjeeling Tea, Pokkali Rice.
- Handicrafts: Kanchipuram Silk Saree, Mysore Silk, Madhubani Painting.
- Food Items: Tirupati Laddu, Bikaneri Bhujia.
