Methane emissions
News
Methane is responsible for ~30% of the rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution.
- Methane concentration in the atmosphere is 2.5 times higher than pre-industrial levels.
- The three main human-caused sources of methane emissions: Agriculture, Energy, and Waste.
In 2024, methane emissions from the energy sector were the highest contributor of methane emission, within that oil & gas facilities (>80 Mt), followed by coal (>40 Mt), traditional bioenergy (18 Mt), and modern bioenergy (2 Mt).
Global Agreements and Commitments related Methane emission:
- Global Methane Pledge (GMP): Aim to reduce global methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030. (India is not a party in this initiative). GMP covers countries that account for more than 50 per cent of global methane emissions from human activity.
- Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter: Aims to reduce the greenhouse gas pollution of 50 major oil and gas companies in 2023
Deploying methane mitigation solutions in the fossil fuel sector can prevent ~0.1°C rise in global temperature by 2050.
