Gonorrhea
About
- Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
- It can infect both men and women and commonly affects the urethra, rectum, throat, and in women, the cervix.
Transmission
- Gonorrhea is mainly spread through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner.
- Pregnant women can pass the infection to their babies during childbirth, potentially causing serious eye infections in newborns.
Symptoms
- Men: May experience a burning sensation during urination, discharge from the penis, and/or testicular pain.
- Women: May experience vaginal discharge, painful urination, bleeding between periods, or lower abdominal pain.
- Many individuals, especially women, may not experience any noticeable symptoms, making early diagnosis challenging.
Treatment
- Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a single dose of Ceftriaxone, an antibiotic given as an injection, for uncomplicated gonorrhea.
