About ASEAN
- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, is a regional & intergovernmental organisation of 10 countries of southeast Asia.
- ASEAN was established in 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration).
- Its members are Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar, Philippines, Brunei and Vietnam.
- The organisation aims to accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavours in the spirit of equality and partnership. They work towards the progress of the southeast Asia region.
Why in News?
- The ASEAN regional grouping has said that Myanmar will not be allowed to participate in any of its meetings till it shows progress on the peace plan.
- It expressed deep disappointment at the limited progress and lack of commitment of the authorities towards the implementation of the Five-point consensus Myanmar agreed to last year at a crisis meeting of the bloc’s leaders to address deadly unrest that followed a coup.
- The Five-point consensus of ASEAN called for immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar and constructive dialogue among all parties to seek a peaceful solution.
