About BrahMos Missile
- BrahMos is the supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India and NPOM of Russia as a Brahmos Aerospace joint venture, which became Brahmos Aerospace Private Limited.
- Brahmos is an amalgamation of the names of the rivers Brahmaputra of India and Moskva of Russia.
- Being a cruise missile it can be guided towards a predetermined land- or sea-based target.
- With a capability to attain speeds 2.8 times that of sound (Mach 2.8), BrahMos is classified as a supersonic cruise missile.
- Besides decreasing the reaction time of the enemy, higher speeds also substantially reduce the chances of the missile getting intercepted.
- It operates on the “Fire and Forget” principle i.e it does not require further guidance after launch.
- Its range has been recently enhanced from 300 Km to 450-600 Km.
Significance of BrahMos missile:
- The missile has established itself as a major force multiplier in modern-day complex battlefields with its impeccable anti-ship and land-attack capabilities with multi-role and multi-platform abilities.
- It has been deployed in all the three wings of the Indian Armed Forces.
Why in the news?
- BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile in Anti-Ship mode was successfully test fired by the Indian Navy.
