Brain fingerprinting to Investigate Hathras rape Case
What is in the news?
- The CBI has sent the accused of Hathras Rape Case to forensic Science Laboratary (FSL) of Gujarat to assess them through Brain Electrical Oscillation Signature Profiling (BEOSP).
What is BEOSP?
- It is also known as Brain Fingerprinting and it is investigated through the brain’s response.
- BEOS is a technique by which a suspect participation in a crime is detected by electing electro physiological impulses, it is also a tool which measures the changes in electrical activity of the brain associated with the presence of knowledge provoked by probes when the suspect does not has to offer an answer or response. It works on an EEG (Electroencephalograph machine).
- The person is made to wear a cap containing electrodes attached to it. Further, a screen in front of the person is flashed with images, audios and videos related to the crime.
- Any triggering of neurons in their brains which then generate brain waves are recorded.
- The tests are based on the phenomenons of ‘knowledge’ and ‘experience‘. A person’s brain might have knowledge of the crime committed and the alibi they have come up with. But it is the ‘experience’ of having participated in the crime that determines their guilt.
- The results are studied well and then a person’s participation in the crime is determined.
- This technique is more accurate than polygraph or lie tests.
Can this test be accepted as evidence?
- No, the results of this test are not solemnly accepted as evidence in the court of law.
- But any information or material discovered during the tests can be made part of the evidence, observed the bench.
