High Performance Habits
High Performance Habits
– Brendon Burchard
Successful people are not born extraordinary, they do ordinary things in an extraordinary way. In High Performance Habits (2017) performance coach Brendon Burchard explores the six habits, also called the HP6, which gives a competitive edge for achievers to try more and retain their performance levels. The book is a culmination of extensive research on the habits cherished and practised by world’s most productive people, to aid anyone who desires a healthier and happier life. For starters, the six habits one must pursue to become a go-getter are, to seek clarity, generate energy, raise necessity, increase productivity, develop influence, and display courage. If you follow these, no more will you be stuck up in the world of tiring emails and exhaustive to-do lists.
Practice makes a man perfect. Do you think it was a cakewalk for successful people to achieve their goals? No, it’s their high performance, good habits, and strong confidence that carved the best out of themselves. The author conducted one of the largest studies on high performance, examining people from 190 countries to analyse their journey to success. The research concluded that external factors like gender, race, age and inherent personality didn’t matter, but it was the key habits and an indomitable spirit to succeed that turned everything into a possible feat. Practising the habits consciously and consistently, and building the confidence to try out new things are the common traits of influential people.
“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why”– said Mark Twain. Rediscovering oneself is optimum in seeking clarity and defining the purpose of your life. The self, social sphere, field of skills, and service are the four elements that help you gain clarity of the goals you want to achieve. Introspection, developing a social conscience like, How will I make this conversation more interesting? , recognising and developing your strong suits and working on behalf of others gives a lucid idea on what and where you want to see yourself in the near future.
A high performer is both mentally strong and physically fit. If you look into the lives of successful CEOs, you will admire their energy levels in everything they do, be it daily exercise or dealing with a major business project. Neuroscientists have found that regular exercise, encountering and anticipating positive events increases the dopamine levels, thus reduces stress and anxiety, and therefore generates happiness. Inculcating an optimistic approach to life even while you are sailing in troubled waters, helps you to achieve the second habit of generating the energy to thrive. With external motivation comes responsibility. Who do you think will win the race, an athlete running for personal gains or the participant doing it for his mother? Probably the second athlete. Raising necessity will bring an urgency to the work you do, pushing to be a hard worker. Aiming high and sharing your intentions with multiple people urges you to be more responsible and committed to the deed. Informing his close social circle about starting an online video course on personal development impelled the author to do it at the earliest.
Do you find yourself demotivated very easily? Efficient planning and execution increases the productivity and performance of the individual. You will see the desired results for the time and energy spent if you have a specific target. Don’t fall prey into a false deadline trap that decreases your performance. Completing the challenging and long term goals can be an incentive for you to redefine your expectations and standards. High performers are like the captain of a ship, because a good captain ensures the safety and wellbeing of his passengers until the ship anchors the shore.
Demonstrate courage and be a risk taker to flout all delimiting norms and conventions. To escape unnecessary criticisms, be candid and honest about your ambitions. Being labelled “crazy, delusional and unrealistic” doesn’t discourage determined individuals to succeed. So embrace the courage to enact and persist, despite your fears. If you master these six habits, success will be yours.
