World Ocean Day
Significance of Oceans
- The ocean covers over 70% of the planet.
- The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world.
- They also absorb about 30 percent of carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming.
- The ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.
- Human activities like garbage disposal, oil leaks, sewage, etc have severely destroyed them in the past few years.
Why in News?
- World Oceans Day is celebrated across the world on June 8. It is an annual event designed to encourage people to celebrate the oceans and take steps to protect ocean health.
- Canada first proposed the concept for World Oceans Day in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Then, in 2004, the Ocean Project and World Ocean Network launched a four-year petition to the United Nations to officially recognise 8 June as World Oceans Day.
- Four years later, in December 2008, a United Nations resolution designated the day for the oceans.
Purpose
- To inform people of the “impact of human actions on the ocean.
- To develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean.
- To mobilise and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.
Theme 2021
- The 2021 theme for world ocean day is ‘The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods’.
- It will shed light on the wonder of the ocean and how it is our life source, supporting humanity and every other organism on Earth.
- This year’s theme is especially relevant in the lead-up to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which will run from 2021 to 2030. The Decade will strengthen international cooperation to develop the scientific research and innovative technologies that can connect ocean science with the needs of society.
- This year there is also focus on the 30×30 campaign, which is a call to safeguard atleast 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030 through a network of protected marine areas.
