Long Range Surface to Air Missile
Why in News:
- Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) is to complete the installation of the Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LR-SAM) system, and the MF-STAR (multi-functional digital active electronically scanned array) radar into the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.
About
- LR-SAM is a joint development by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) of Israel, and is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited. MF-STAR is manufactured by the IAI and is also in service on other frontline warships of the Indian Navy.
- LRSAM is also referred to as the Barak 8 missile.
- The Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) has the same missile configuration.
- The missile is intended to protect against all kinds of airborne threats, including those posed by helicopters, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
- Missiles, MFSTAR (Radar), a weapon control system, a vertical launcher unit, and a two-way data link make up the LRSAM programme.
- The missile has maximum speed of Mach 2 with a maximum operational range of 70 km, which was later increased to ~90km
- Mach is used as a unit of measurement in stating the speed of a moving object in relation to the speed of sound.
