Vitthalbhai Jhaverbhai Patel (1873–1933)
- Patel was elected to the Central Legislative Assembly in 1924 and became its first Indian President (Speaker) in 1925.
- After Mahatma Gandhi suspended the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1922, Patel co-founded the Swaraj Party along with Motilal Nehru and Chittaranjan Das.
- Before his national role, Patel served on the Bombay Legislative Council beginning in 1912. He was instrumental in passing legislation like the Bombay District Municipal Act Amendment Bill and advocated for expanding primary education.
- In his later years, Patel traveled extensively in the United States and Europe to raise international awareness for India’s freedom movement. While in Europe, his health declined, and he passed away in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 22, 1933.
- Towards the end of his life, Patel allied with Subhas Chandra Bose, with whom he shared similar views on achieving India’s freedom. He even bequeathed a portion of his property to Bose to support the cause.
