What’s in the news?

In a major push to transform India’s dairy cooperative sector, the Government of India has launched ‘White Revolution 2.0’, a comprehensive initiative aimed at empowering women farmers and creating job opportunities.
The programme focuses on four key areas – empowering women farmers, enhancing local milk production, strengthening dairy infrastructure, and boosting dairy exports.
Under White Revolution 2.0, the government aims to increase milk procurement by dairy cooperative societies by 50 per cent over the next five years.

‘Cooperation among Cooperatives’

The Government has also announced the nationwide expansion of the ‘Cooperation among Cooperatives’ initiative, which was successfully piloted in Gujarat.
This programme will provide interest-free cash credit to dairy farmers through RuPay-Kisan Credit Cards and distribute micro-ATMs to dairy cooperative societies, bringing banking services to farmers’ doorsteps.

Operation Flood, also referred to as the “White Revolution,” was a massive dairy development program launched by the Indian government in 1970.
It transformed India from a milk-deficient nation to a milk-surplus one.
Major factors which contributed to the success of white revolution in India are:
- Institution of cooperatives especially for marketing of milk;
- Investments in milk processing;
- Artificial insemination in cows and
- Absence of restrictive regulations on milk marketing and trade.

Milk scenario in India

India is the world’s top milk producer, with production having reached 230.58 million tonnes during 2022-23.
The average yield is, however, only 8.55 kg per animal per day for exotic/ crossbred animals, and 3.44 kg/ animal/ day for indigenous/ nondescript animals.
The yield in Punjab is 13.49 kg/ animal/ day (exotic/ crossbreed), but only 6.30 kg/ animal/ day in West Bengal.
The national per capita availability of milk is 459 grams/ day, which is higher than the global average of 323 g/ day.
The top five milk producing states are UP (15.72%), Rajasthan (14.44%), Madhya Pradesh (8.73%), Gujarat (7.49%), and Andhra Pradesh (6.70%), which together contribute 53.08% of the country’s total milk production.
