- Maldives is an independent island country in the north-central Indian Ocean. It consists of a chain of about 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks grouped in clusters, or atolls.

- The northernmost atoll is to the south-southwest of the Indian mainland, and the central area is to the southwest of Sri Lanka.
- The Eight Degree Channel separates the Minicoy islands from Maldives. It forms the Maritime boundary between India and Maldives.
- The Maldives is India’s maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and occupies a special place in the vision of ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’.
