Bacteria based Cancer Therapy
About
- Bacteria-based cancer therapy, also known as Bug Drugs, leverages the distinctive properties of certain bacteria to detect, target, and destroy cancer cells.
- These therapies take advantage of the unique ability of certain bacteria to proliferate inside tumours.
- The low oxygen, acidic and dead tissue in the area around the cancer – the tumour “microenvironment”, create an ideal niche for some bacteria to thrive.
- Once there, bacteria can, in theory, directly kill tumour cells or activate the body’s immune responses against the cancer.
- However, introducing live bacteria into a patient’s body can cause harm. Researchers have had to carefully attenuate (weaken) bacterial strains to ensure they don’t damage healthy tissue.
- Additionally, controlling the bacteria’s behaviour within the tumour and preventing them from spreading to other parts of the body has been difficult.
