New addition on Ramsar sites

What’s in the News?

  • India has added four new wetlands to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
  • It includes Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary and Therthangal Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, Khecheopalri Wetland in Sikkim and Udhwa Lake in Jharkhand. 
  • This marks a significant milestone for Sikkim and Jharkhand, as they have secured their first-ever Ramsar sites.
  • The country now has 89 of these sites, making it the nation with the most Ramsar sites in Asia and the third highest number of such sites in the world. 
  • Tamil Nadu has the most number of Ramsar sites in India, 20 in number.

 

Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary
  • It is a peri-urban wetland situated in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.
  • The sanctuary supports over 120 species of birds, including the near-threatened spot-billed pelican (Pelecanus philippensis). The abundant babul trees (Acacia nilotica) provide ideal nesting habitats for various bird species. 
  • The water in the sanctuary, enriched by bird droppings, is utilized by local communities for agriculture. 
Therthangal Bird Sanctuary
  • It is a marshy lake situated in Therthangal village, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu.
  • The sanctuary is home to 96 bird species, including endangered species like the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) and the vulnerable Indian spotted eagle (Clanga hastata).
Khecheopalri Lake
  • It is a sacred and ecologically significant site located near Khecheopalri village in West Sikkim.
  • It is a freshwater lake.
  • This Site serves as an important habitat and stopover site for birds migrating across the Himalayas, including the critically endangered Baer’s pochard 
Udhwa Lake
  • It is situated in the Sahibganj district of Jharkhand, India.
  • The Site comprises two interconnected wetlands, Pataura Lake and Barhel Lake, which are surrounded by the hillocks of the Rajmahal Hills and linked by a channel to the Ganga River. 
  • In 2016, the Site was designated as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area.
  • The Site provides habitat for the endangered band-tailed fish eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) and the vulnerable common pochard (Aythya ferina) and lesser adjutant stork (Leptoptilos javanicus).

 

Ramsar Convention: 

  • It is an international agreement for promoting the conservation and wise use of wetlands. 
  • It is the only global treaty to focus on a single ecosystem. 
  • It was established in 1971, in Ramsar (Iran) by UNESCO. 
  • A Ramsar site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
