Mission Shakti

About the Scheme

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development is implementing the Umbrella Mission named as ‘Mission Shakti’ from 2024.
  • It is an integrated women empowerment programme aimed at strengthening interventions for women safety, security and empowerment. 
  • It also seeks to reduce the care burden on women and increase female labour force participation by promoting skill development, capacity building, financial literacy, access to micro-credit etc.

Components

  • Mission Shakti has two verticals – ‘Sambal’ and ‘Samarthya’. 
    • The “Sambal” vertical is for the safety and security of women. It has the schemes of One Stop Centres (OSCs), Women Helpline (WHL), Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) and Nari Adalat.
    • The “Samarthya” vertical is for empowerment of women. It has the schemes of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), Shakti Sadan, Sakhi Niwas, Palna and SANKALP: Hub for Empowerment of Women (HEW).

 

  • One Stop Centres (OSCs) provide integrated services like legal counselling and help, psycho-social counselling and support, providing information about help and facilities available for women etc. under one roof. 
  • Women Helplines (181) are already running in States/ Union Territories as an emergency/non-emergency response system on a toll-free telephonic short code 181.
  • Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) aims to address concerns about gender discrimination and women empowerment in the country. 
  • Nari Adalat is a new sub-component for providing women with an alternate grievance redressal mechanism through women collectives comprising of 7–11 socially respectable women of the local community for resolving cases of petty nature.
  • Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) provides financial support for pregnant and lactating mothers to improve the health and nutrition during pregnancy and after delivery as well as compensation for wage loss.
    • Under PMMVY, pregnant women receive a cash incentive of ₹5,000 for their first living child. Maternity benefit of ₹6000 is provided for the second child, but only if, the second child a girl child, to discourage pre-birth sex selection.
  • Shakti Sadan aims to provide homes and institutional support for empowerment of women facing destitution of any kind.
  • Sakhi Niwas are to provide safe and secure places to stay for working women in the cities and the areas having job potential. 
  • Palna (erstwhile scheme of National Creche Scheme) is meant to provide safe and secure place for children of working women so as to act as a catalyst for enhancing Female Labour Force Participation. 
  • SANKALP: HEW will serve as a vehicle to bridge the information and knowledge gap regarding schemes and facilities available for women and guide them to avail the benefits and entitlements.
