About NCW
- The National Commission for Women (NCW) is a statutory body formed in 1992 under the National Commission Act 1990.
- It is the apex national level organization of India with the mandate of protecting and promoting the interests of women.
- It provides the government with advice to make policies and laws that are more prone to protect and safeguard the rights of women.
- The commission also has the powers that are vested upon with a civil court.
Objectives
- The objectives of NCW are as follows:
- To review legal and constitutional safeguards for women.
- To advise the Government on all policy matters affecting women.
- To facilitate redressal of grievances.
- To make recommendations relating to remedial legislation measures.
Composition
- A Chairperson, committed to the cause of women, to be nominated by the Central Government.
- Five Members to be nominated by the Central Government from amongst persons of ability, integrity and standing who have had experience in law or legislation, trade unionism, management of an industry potential of women, women’s voluntary organizations ( including women activists ), administration, economic development, health, education or social welfare.
- A Member-Secretary to be nominated by the Central Government.

- Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar has begun her tenure as the 9th Chairperson of the National Commission for Women.
