About the Index
- Global Innovation Index (GII) is published annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.
- GII ranks global economies according to their innovation capabilities, using 80+ indicators.
- The metrics include institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication and business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs and creative outputs.
- Over the years, the GII has established itself as a policy tool for various governments and helped them to reflect upon the existing status quo.
Why in News?
- WIPO has published its Global Innovation Index for the year 2024.
Highlights of the Index
- India has ranked 39th out of 133 economies. This marks an improvement from last year, when the country was ranked 40th.
- India ranks first among the 10 economies in the Central and Southern Asia region. India also ranked 1st among lower-middle-income economies.
- Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, Singapore and the United Kingdom are the world’s most innovative economies.
