North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR)
About the Organisation:
- NECTAR is an autonomous society, established in 2012 under Department of Science & Technology, Government of India with its headquarter at Shillong, Meghalaya.
- The Centre will look at harnessing and leveraging niche frontier technologies (unique and latest tech) available with central scientific departments and institutions.
- In order to assist the eight states of the North Eastern Region (NER), NECTAR will be ensuring applications of appropriate technologies for development in the areas of biodiversity concerns, watershed management, telemedicine, horticulture, infrastructure planning & development, planning and monitoring, tele-schooling, employment generation etc.
- It aims to work in these areas through utilisation of local products/resources and associated skill development.
NECTAR’s role in Commercialisation of Bamboos:
- Bamboo holds medicinal and spiritual significance in the cultural beliefs of Northeast India. The region also has an abundant supply of bamboo.
- In this context, NECTAR has supported the development and commercialisation of bamboo-based projects to preserve the tribal cultural heritage. Few projects are given below:
- Bamboo Water towers;
- Bamboos as pipes and faucets;
- Waste to energy plants using bamboo-based gasification process;
- Edible bamboo shoot processing for low-fat high fibre dietary requirement;
- Bamboo pulp-based hygiene products for rural areas;
- Development/customisation of machinery according to available bamboo species;
- Bamboo based water treatment plants.
- Earthquake resistant and easy to install prefabricated as well as permanent bamboo-based structures for remote regions.
Beyond Bamboo, NECTAR also works in other areas which benefit the people of North East India like, Agriculture, Food processing, Flood management, Water and Sanitation, livelihood activities, Health, Geo-spatial, eco-friendly products and Training & capacity building.
