About

• • Przewalski’s horses are often described as small and stocky. They have a large head, thick neck and short legs. 
  • Przewalski horses are commonly referred to as one of the world’s last breeds of wild horse.

• There are around 2000 Przewalski’s horses found around the world in China, Mongolia, Russia, France , etc

• They have a pale belly and beige to reddish-brown coat.
• This species often lives in groups that contain several mares, a dominant stallion, and their offspring.
• Przewalski’s horses graze on grass and leaves from shrubby trees.

Threats

• While their greatest threat today is loss of genetic diversity, their extinction in the wild was also brought on by hunting, loss of habitat, and loss of water sources to domestic animals

Conservation status

• IUCN Red List: Endangered

Why in News?

• Przewalski’s horses have been reintroduced into Kazakhstan Steppes,  after an absence of about 200 years.
