- March 4, 2024 marks the inscription in the French Constitution, of the “freedom of women to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy”, making France the first country in the world to enshrine it as a constitutional right, 49 years after abortion became legal(1975, Veil Act).
- Work of French feminist icon Simone de Beauvoir is important in the legalisation of Abortion in France.
- Beauvoir’s famous works include, “The Second Sex”, a book by her and “Manifesto of the 343”, penned by her and signed by 343 eminent women who opened up to publicly claim that they had had an abortion.
- Biarritz Partnership for Gender Equality: In Biarritz, the Heads of State and Government of G7 Countries adopted a Declaration on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment.
- In this declaration, they expressed their wish to create a global coalition determined to achieve full empowerment of girls and women around the world.
- They recognized that effective implementation and enforcement of laws promoting gender equality can be a powerful force for the empowerment of women and girls.
- They expressed their concern that too many women and girls around the world are affected by discriminatory laws and the lack of legal protection.
- India is a member of this partnership.
