About
- Technical Textiles is an advanced technology backed sunrise sector which is steadily gaining ground in India.
- Technical textiles are functional fabrics that have applications across various industries including automobiles, civil engineering and construction, agriculture, healthcare, industrial safety, personal protection etc.
- Technical Textiles are a futuristic and niche segment of textiles, which are used for various applications ranging from agriculture, roads, railway tracks, sportswear, health on one end to bullet proof jacket, fireproof jackets, high altitude combat gear and space applications on another end of spectrum.
Mission Objectives
- To undertake:
(i) Fundamental research and development of Carbon Fibre, Aramid Fibre, Nylon Fibre, UHMWPE and their Composites,
(ii) Application based research in Agro-textiles, Geo-textiles, Medical textiles, Mobile textiles and Sports textiles including development of Bio-degradable and Sustainable technical textiles. - Improve the Penetration level of technical textiles in the country and upgrade the skills sets of the workforce.
- Promote usage of technical textiles in various flagship mission, programmes including strategic sectors in India.
- Develop indigenous machineries and process equipment for technical textiles to promote “Make in India” and enable competitiveness of the industry.
- Promotion of innovation amongst young engineering/ technology/ science standards and graduates; along with creation of innovation and incubation centres and promotion of “start-ups” and “ventures”.
Why in News?
- With a view to position the country as a global leader in Technical Textiles, National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) has been approved with an outlay of Rs. 1,480 crore; from Financial Year 2020-21 and valid upto 31.03.2026.
- So far, 137 research projects have been approved under NTTM. The total cost approved of the said projects by the Government is Rs. 474.7 crore (approx.).
