LIC-IS (low-intensity conflict – internal security) domain
- The LIC-IS domain problem in India refers to the complex and ongoing challenges related to small scale threats within the country’s borders. These threats are characterised by being:
- Low-intensity: Compared to full-blown wars, LIC-IS involves smaller-scale violence and disruption, often employing radicalisation, terror attacks, guerilla tactics, sabotage, and other non-conventional methods.
- Internal: These threats arise mostly within India’s territory and among its own citizens. In most cases it is supported in a clandestine manner by a foreign country. Eg: Pakistan’s promotion of terrorism in Kashmir.
- Persistent: LIC-IS often involves protracted conflicts that last for years or even decades, rather than being resolved quickly.
- Here are some specific examples of LIC-IS problems in India:
- Maoist insurgency, Cross border terrorism, Insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir, Cybersecurity threats.
