About GCC

• The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a political and economic union of Arab states bordering the Gulf. 
• It was established in 1981 and its 6 members are the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain. 
• The official language is Arabic. 
• The GCC Charter states that the basic objectives are to have coordination, integration and inter-connection between Member States in all fields, strengthening ties between their peoples, formulating similar regulations in various fields such as economy, finance, trade, customs, tourism, etc.

Why in News?

• India is ramping up its diplomatic efforts with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states ahead of the Group of Twenty Summit, which will take place in New Delhi in September under India’s presidency. 
• India recently hosted a virtual summit attended by 125 countries to articulate the voice of the Global South in international institutions and promote balanced representation of developing countries. 
• These efforts signify India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the GCC states and promoting greater cooperation and connectivity in the region.
