New START Treaty
About New START Treaty
- The New START Treaty, which came into force in 2011, caps the number of strategic nuclear warheads that the United States and Russia can deploy, and the deployment of land- and submarine-based missiles and bombers to deliver them.
- New START replaced the 1991 START I treaty, which expired in 2009, and superseded the 2002 Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty (SORT).
- The Treaty also allows for verification inspections and information sharing.
- The treaty had been suspended in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why in News?
- Russia has postponed nuclear weapons talks with the United States set to take place this week in Cairo.
