- The Khelo India (‘Let’s play India’) scheme is the flagship Central Sector Scheme of the Ministry of Sports.
- It aims at reviving India’s sporting culture by engaging with children at the grassroots level.
- The initiative also focused on building better sporting infrastructure and academies across the country for various sports.
- Under this movement, the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) and the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) were set up as annual events where youngsters, representing their states and universities, respectively, showcased their skills and competed for medals.
- A financial assistance of Rs 6.28 lakhs is allocated for each residential athlete training at the accredited academies as per the annual Khelo India scholarship scheme. That includes an out of pocket allowance of Rs 1.20 lakh.
Why in News?
- Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Thakur has said that, at present, there are four hundred and fifty Khelo India centers in the country.
- He declared that renowned former players will be given five lakh rupees to run such centers that will impart training to the budding talents.
