The Ukraine crisis negatively affects world order and fragments the global interconnectedness. Comment
In terms of international collaboration, security, military usage, economic order, and even cultural relations, the recent war between Ukraine and Russia in the post-Globe War II scenario harmed the linked world built by the neoliberal world order. The recent war between Ukraine and Russia in the post world war II scenario hurt the interconnected world established by neo-liberal world order in terms of international cooperation, security, military use, economic order, and even cultural ties.
How it affects global order:
Political:
- The global order has broken down and events in Ukraine have exposed the United Nations and the Security Council for their complete ineffectiveness.
- Counter to every line of the UN Charter preamble particularly Articles 1 and 2 of the ‘Purposes and Principles’ of the United Nations
- Other P-5 members such as the United States, the United Kingdom and France did not seek to strengthen the global order either, imposing sanctions unilaterally rather than attempting to bring them to the UN.
- There are also the covenants agreed upon during the global war on terrorism, which have been degraded, with the use of non-state actors in the Ukraine crisis.
- Divisions within United Nations and the Security Council. For example- Russia and China strengthening partnership in UNSC •
Military:
- Ukraine is receiving weapons support from the West.
- Attacks on people in Ukraine and The number of refugees is increasing.
- In the international world order, the nuclear environment is changing. The Russian military is moving to Chernobyl-affected areas and shelling structures near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power facility. There is scepticism about the nuclear non-proliferation regime’s credibility
Economy:
- Western sanctions are affecting the international financial system established under the World Trade Organization
- Supply chain interruption of Palladium and Neon
- Russia’s exclusion from SWIFT payments
- Rise in oil prices
- For online transactions, Russian banks utilise the Chinese “UnionPay” system.
- Gradually, the world may see a “non-dollar” system emerge which would run banking, fintech and credit systems separately from the “dollar world”.
How it affects Interconnectedness
- Russia’s exclusion from SWIFT payments
- The emergence of a system other than the dollar
- From the termination of Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Paypal to the banning of particular Russian firms and billionaires, there has been a lot going on in Russia lately.
- Pressure is being applied to Western corporations operating in Russia (McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and others) to shut down.
- Russia has entered into alternative commercial agreements with nations such as China and India.
- Food security is at risk. The major wheat producers are Russia and Ukraine. Impact on the production of sunflower oil
- The Russian media ban
- The deterioration of cultural ties
- All Russian-owned, Russian-controlled, or Russian-registered planes are banned from EU airspace, and international routes are cancelled.
Role of India
- India must communicate with all parties and interact with all of its partners on a regular basis, bearing in mind that there is no justification for any country’s territorial sovereignty to be violated.
- The United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom are all important partners for India, and its ties with each of them, as well as the Western world in general, are considerably more than the sum of their parts.
- Rather than dividing the globe and returning to the days of the Cold Conflict, all sides should take a step back and focus on averting an all-out war.
- India must also make it plain to coercive nations that their “with us or against us” rhetoric isn’t helpful.
The security concerns of both Ukraine and Russia must be addressed via diplomacy, and trust in the international system must be built through the United Nations.
