World Sustainable Development Summit 2022
About the summit
- It is the annual flagship event of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
- Started in 2001, the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) aims to provide long-term solutions for the benefit of the global community by assembling the various stakeholders on a single platform and initiating a step in the direction of achieving constructive action in combating issues pertinent to the future of humanity.
- It provides a platform for global leaders and practitioners to discuss and deliberate over climatic issues of universal importance.
- Previously WSDS was called the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS).
Why in the news?
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the inaugural address at TERI World Sustainable Development Summit 2022.
- The Prime Minister stressed that environmental sustainability can only be achieved through climate justice. He said that energy requirements of the people of India are expected to nearly double in the next twenty years. Denying this energy would be denying life itself to millions. Successful climate actions also need adequate financing. For this, developed countries need to fulfill their commitments on finance and technology transfer.
- The Prime Minister reiterated the two initiatives of LIFE – Lifestyle For Environment and Pro Planet People (3-Ps). These global coalitions will form foundation of our environment efforts for improving the global commons.

- It was established in 1974 as Tata Energy Research Institute and was renamed The Energy and Resources Institute in 2003.
