Srinagar as “Creative City”
Why in News:
- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has picked Srinagar among 49 cities as part of the creative city network under the Crafts and Folk Arts category.
- With the inclusion of 49 new cities this year, total numbers of cities in this network stands at 295 from across 90 countries.
About creative city network
- The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.
- The cities which currently make up this network work together towards a common objective: placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level.
- The network involves folk art, media, film, literature, design, gastronomy and media arts, in order to advance sustainable urban development.
How does the inclusion benefit Srinagar?
- The inclusion is likely to pave way for the city to represent its handicrafts on the global stage through UNESCO
- The cultural heritage and current creative assets of the city will be the pillars to build a consistent action plan, which contributes to the sustainable urban development of the city in line with the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Indian cities that have joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN):
- Chennai is included in UNESCO City of music.
- Varanasi is included in UNESCO City of music.
- Jaipur is included in UNESCO city of crafts and folk arts.
- Srinagar is included in UNESCO city of Crafts and Folk Arts.
- Mumbai is included in UNESCO city of film.
- Hyderabad is included in UNESCO City of gastronomy.
- These cities were included in the list in recognition of their commitment of placing culture & creativity at the heart of their development as well as for sharing knowledge & good practices.
