India’s contribution to climate change in last 200 years just 3 per cent
What is Climate?
- Climate is the average weather in a given area over a longer period of time.
- A typical description of a climate includes information on, e.g. the average temperature in different seasons, rainfall, and sunshine. Also a description of the (chance of) extremes is often included.
- According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the classical period used for describing a climate is 30 years.
What is climate change?
-
- According to International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Climate change refers to a change in the state of the climate that can be identified (e.g. using statistical tests) by changes in the mean and/or the variability of its properties, and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer.
- It refers to any change in climate over time, whether due to natural variability or as a result of human activity.
- On the other hand United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), climate change refers to a change of climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and that is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods.
- Global Warming, which is an increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere, is held responsible for climate change in our times.
- The warming of the atmosphere is largely due to greenhouse gases, which are those gases which trap the sun’s radiation in the atmosphere such as methane, carbon, etc.
About the news:
- In a seminar arranged by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Environment minister said that India’s contribution to climate change in the last 200 years is just 3%.
- He said that the United States, Europe and China (in the last 40 years) are largely responsible for it because of industrialisation. He argued that they preferred economy to environment and have caused climate change disasters.
