G7
About G7
- The Group of Seven (G7) is a collective of seven of the world’s most industrialized and developed economies. Their political leaders come together annually to discuss important global economic, political, social and security issues.
- The G7 member countries are the United States, Britain, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, and Canada.
- Russia belonged to the forum from 1998 through 2014, when the bloc was known as the G8, but was suspended following its annexation of Crimea.
- India is not a member of the G-7 grouping.
Why in News?
- The United Kingdom has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the G7 summit that is scheduled to be held in June.
- Apart from India, Australia and South Korea are also invited to participate in the proceedings of the summit as “guest countries”.
- Mr. Modi participated in the G7 summit in 2019 when French President Emmanuel Macron had invited India.
- The invitation came days after the U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson had to cancel his visit to India in the last week of January because of a new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Britain.
- Cooperation between the U.K. and India is significant this year as India is a non-permanent member at the UN Security Council, where the United Kingdom will take over the presidency in February.
