MISTAKES TO AVOID DURING UPSC CSE STUDY
MISTAKES TO AVOID DURING UPSC CSE STUDY
Mistakes help a person to grow, but they are embarrassing at times. On preparing for UPSC CSE one should avoid certain mistakes. This will help one to clear the exam in their first attempt itself. There are ten mistakes that most aspirants commit. They are as follows:
- STARTING WITHOUT A PROPER STRATEGY AND VISION
Putting a lot of effort without a clear idea will only make one miss the target. Before preparing for the exam one should first formulate the ideas, have a vision, and follow a proper strategy.
2. NOT COMMITTING TO A SINGLE STRATEGY
There is a plethora of guidance available for people today and this leads to chaos and confusion. An aspirant must stick to a single strategy. If a particular strategy doesn’t work for them then they can change it. One can watch a maximum of three to four videos and create their strategy with the available inputs. It is not advisable to follow others’ technique, each one’s way of thinking is different.
3. NOT BEING MAINS-READY BEFORE PRELIMS
One should prepare from the MAINS angle because, after PRELIMS, it would be hard to prepare for MAINS in a short period. Focusing on PRELIMS is the cause of multiple attempts. Not prepared for MAINS will cause pressure in the end. Preparing from the MAINS perspective gives the confidence to clear the exam on the first attempt itself.
4. NOT PREPARING OWN NOTES
There are many books available in the market but people should prepare notes on their own. This will help one with proper revision without a waste of time as it will be easy to follow and remember.
5. NOT WRITING ANSWERS AND TESTS PERIODICALLY
This is an integral part of the journey. Most of the aspirants do not take tests because of fear or laziness. Getting over this fear and writing answers will take one to a higher level. Though it is difficult to take tests, taking tests will help one perform well in the examination.
6. NOT REFERRING TO SYLLABUS AND PREVIOUS YEAR QUESTION PAPERS
This is the biggest mistake that people tend to make. One cannot prepare without knowing the syllabus. The syllabus tells us what one should read and the previous year question paper tells one how to read a topic. This helps us realize a particular topic’s importance and prepare accordingly.
7. READING EXCESSIVE NUMBER OF RESOURCES
This is a common mistake done by aspirants. One should always limit the resources and be precise. Aspirants should be selective and thorough with what they read.
8. WASTING UNNECESSARY TIME ON NEWSPAPER
Reading newspapers is important but spending too much time on it is unnecessary. One can take one and a half hours to read a newspaper. The front page and editorial pages should be given keen concentration, whereas one can glance through the other pages. It is unnecessary to take long notes on each topic and to read the analysis on something. One should be specific in reading newspapers and spend time carefully. The Hindu and Indian Express are the suggested newspapers by UPSC CSE toppers.
9. DESTRUCTIVE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media like WhatsApp, Quora, and Telegram are educational sources. They are used as platforms for study and for discussion. Though they are useful. One should try to avoid engaging in meaningless discussions. Posting pictures of the collection of books on WhatsApp and answering the questions on Quora and reading comments on telegram only distracts an individual’s focus and peace of mind. People should know how to balance their studies and social media activities.
10. OVER-THINKING ABOUT THE RESULTS
It is a waste of time and energy to think about things that one cannot control. It causes us to lose one’s motivation and spreads negativity. Proper focus on the target and good preparation give good results. So, it is good not to think about the success ratio or regret the past. Avoid it and work with full positive vibes.
If one can avoid these ten mistakes and proceed with positivity, one can be sure of clearing the exam in the first attempt. Correct your mistakes and learn from them.
