NEW WAYS OF LEARNING TO IMPROVE MEMORY
NEW WAYS OF LEARNING TO IMPROVE MEMORY
Memory plays a vital role in everyone’s life. It is the superior cognitive process defined as the temporal dimension of mental organization. Memory is a symbiotic relationship that stores what one learns for future use. It is an active, subjective, intelligent refection process of a person’s past experiences. This shows the significance of memory in an individual’s life.
The older generation looked at memorization as an essential skill in their lives. To memorize something seemed to more important for them. In this new era, with the development of technology, memory is given less importance. Almost all of us take a picture of the screen and store it on our devices. Our life culture has changed so much that instead of storing things in one’s memory, people have started to store in devices. Memorization appears to be a difficult task for many of us, especially to school-going children. It is one of the reasons why kids skip going to school. Students should be made to fall in love with the science and art of learning at a specific time. To do this teachers and elders can think of new interesting ways to engage children. There are various ways to make memorization much easier.
The best way to memorize is to reflect on one’s self. People should be made to realize that they are capable of memorizing things. Memorization can be made interesting by connecting the information to something else that people already know. One can make crazy connections which will stay in one’s head for a long time and help them to remember the information. Another way is to use bizarre images to memorize linking it to a different place or the parts of the plant or organs of the body, etc. This technique helps one memorize things in order like names of presidents, dates, or years.
A study was made on a group of people to test their memory capability. The group was asked to memorize ten words in thirty seconds, and then was given thirty seconds to write what they remember and finally, they asked to correct the answers. Most of them found it very hard to remember the words. This is because the mere repetition of words did not work. After all, these people did not visualize.
Visualization helps in faster memory and also in the correct order. Another study with the same set of people was conducted. This time a story was narrated to them and they were asked to visualize it. The story carried the names of the Presidents of the US in the right order. Nobody realized it when the story was narrated but, in the end, when they were told about this, they made connections and were able to get the names of their Presidents in order. One should learn to use new ways to approach something old.
Three steps that help in improving memory are:
- The Check
- The Experience
- The Experiment
The first step is the check which is to become aware of what an individual is doing at that moment. One should check on the method used to memorize and discover new ways. The second step is the experience. Here, a person should open up to new possibilities and try it. This step opts for visualization, to see something new. The third step is the experiment, which is to take something from the new experience and apply it to an individual’s life to see if it works. These three steps improve the skill of memorization. This skill develops another skill i.e. the skill of experimentation. When one experiments different things, it will allow one to discover different things and develop new skills.
These skills and methods help one to improve their memory and develop the skill of experimentation. It also gives a person the confidence to try whatever one wants to do. Don’t hate learning, it is a beautiful process that makes life interesting. One can always improve their memory because memory is a contrary thing, even if one cannot remember something at a particular moment, it will return sometime later. As Franklin P. Jones says, “You never realize what a good memory you have until you try to forget something.” Therefore, do not stop learning, it is the only thing that nobody can take it away from you.
“The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.”
