Mount Everest Got 86 centimeter Higher
Why in the News?
- Nepal and China jointly endorsed the new height of Mount Everest as 8,848.86 meters which was earlier considered to be 8,848 meters.
About Mount Everest
- Everest – also known as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Mount Qomolangma in China – was an important symbol of the China-Nepal friendship.
- Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. Its identity as the highest point on the Earth’s surface was not recognized, however, until 1852, when the governmental Survey of India established that fact.
- In 1865 the mountain—previously referred to as Peak XV—was renamed for Sir George Everest, British surveyor general of India from 1830 to 1843.
- The Himalayan mountain range and Tibetan plateau have formed as a result of the collision between the Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate which began 50 million years ago and continues today.
- The Himalayas themselves started rising about 25 to 30 million years ago, and the Great Himalayas began to take their present form during the Pleistocene Epoch (about 2,600,000 to 11,700 years ago).
- Information from global positioning instruments in place on Everest since the late 1990s indicates that the mountain continues to move a few inches to the northeast and rise a fraction of an inch each year.
- Sir Edmund Hillary, along with Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay in May 1953 are the first climbers of the peak.
Timelines of the measurement of the Mount Everest
- 8,848 meters as decided by Survey of India in 1954, using instruments like theodolites and chains.
- In 1999, a US team put the elevation at 29,035 feet (nearly 8,850 m).
- China always claimed the height to be 8,844 meters, which affected its tourism as it would provide certificates to climbers with less height than the Nepal certificates.
- Post 2015 Nepal Earthquake, there was a query of Mount Everest’s height being affected by the earthquake.
- In 2019, Nepal along with New Zealand did its survey taking the help of Global Navigation System (GNS) and measured Mount Everest.
- China too did its survey in 2020 and along with Nepal declared the height of Mount Everest.
What are the benefits?
- The end of the debate is politically symbolic of two increasingly close neighbours coming together.
- It’s an important takeaway for Nepal, as it is a moment of national pride in achieving this technological feat.
