How to Succeed in Life
How to Succeed in Life
Most of us have attended normal schools where they try to force feed us with information without focusing on also understanding and extracting our skills. Schools have often failed to realize our true potential and creativity. They don’t give you a chance for self-actualization or to discover your element. People thus become so far removed from an understanding of themselves that they end up living a life they didn’t want to, living it up to someone else’s expectation or even become someone to impress someone else. The reason why most people fail to make progress in their fields of interest is that they are often trapped by what others think. This leads to limiting your abilities and prevents you from finding the answers to the real questions in life.
Develop a process of self-realisation and self-actualization where you figure out what works for you and what your strengths are. It starts at the physical level. We all have different body types and hence different body needs and tolerances. Gaining a better understanding of what you can do, what you cannot and your limits include in self-awareness at the physical level. Knowing what type of people you like to be with, who helps you grow and who drains you is self-awareness on a mental level.
Do you have a crazy dream or goal? Have a dream that keeps you up at night? Well, then that’s the real dream you should be chasing! You have to find that dream, chase it and make it a reality and for that, you need a strategy. As the French writer Antoine de Saint- Exupery said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish”; it is essential that you work towards your goals with proper planning. You can’t be what you don’t see. If you hadn’t met a successful manager or CEO, you wouldn’t want to be one because you don’t know what it looks like, feels like or what it takes. There are basically four questions you need to ask yourself to discover the passion in you.
- What do I love?
- What am I good at?
- What does the world need?
- How do I get paid for it?
Your passion satisfies you while your purpose helps others. Your passion will bring you joy because when you use your passion to bring a change and make a difference in someone else’s life, that is a service. Answers to all the above questions come from within and often we don’t ask the right question. All the successful companies and organizations that we admire and respect today have come from trying to solve a problem or answering a prevalent question.
There are people who graduated and immediately found jobs and those who take years to find it. It took 32 years for J.K. Rowling to publish Harry Potter after being rejected by 12 publishers. Morgan Freeman got his big break at 52. All these point to the fact that everything in your life happens according to your own time and pace. It may seem like some friends are way ahead of you and some lagging behind, but everyone has a time of their own and all you need to do is be patient and persevering. Don’t let anyone rush you with their timelines. As Einstein said, “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted, counts.” The most important thing is to be able to create a meaningful, purposeful and fulfilling life for yourself and finding out how to use it to produce an impact in other’s lives. This will be the true measure of your success.
You have to deal with your challenges at the root level. By going to the root of the problem and learning how to tackle it will help you get through any situation in life. Though it takes a longer time, the results will be lasting. You might start with a good intention but every day it gets surrounded by weeds- unwanted intentions like fame, money, followers etc. Sometimes we allow the weeds to grow so much that we mistake it to be the plant. It is thus important to cut the weeds off at the root level.
The saying, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”, by Einstein rings true in this day and age. Too many of us are like monkeys who are taught to swim and like lions that are taught to behave like house cats. We are not allowed to thrive in our element. We all have a special genius in us and hence it’s important that we live in the element we have been naturally given rather than trying to adopt another.
