5 Keys to Self-Discipline!!!
5 Keys to Self-Discipline!!!
Terry Crews
Everything that you do in life has to be self-disciplined. It is important to view discipline training and not punishment. You will start welcoming discipline only when you perceive it as a way to get better. When discipline comes from outside us, it is quite natural that we hate things we do in order to succeed. Therefore, it is important to develop self-discipline within yourself. Trainers and teachers have to train their students to move out in life, to keep them going and this can develop self-discipline within them. Terry Crews suggests some practical ways to improve this.
- Remove temptations
If you are trying to improve yourself better, it is important to eradicate temptations. Eliminate things which dissuade you from your goal. One way to do this is by examining yourself, the way you think and act. To give an example, if you are a person who wants to go to the gym every day, make sure that you keep everything ready like your clothes and other necessary items before you sleep. This will cut down on the resistance you feel when trying to go to the gym. Avoiding temptation is the key to self-discipline.
2. Eat regularly and healthily
It is important to examine your actions while you are hungry, angry, lonely or tired (HALT). If you are in these states, it is very difficult to have self-discipline as you will be weak at these times. Therefore, when you are:
- hungry -eat well
- angry –be calm
- lonely-call a friend/near ones
- tired-take rest
3.Don’t wait for it to feel right
Our brain is made up of different areas. Basal Ganglia in the brain is responsible for habit making. For e.g., the habit of making you wake up early, doing exercise etc. At the same time, there is another part in the brain which is known as the Prefrontal Cortex, which is responsible for decision making. When you decide against Basal ganglia, you feel it is not right. E.g., if you are a right handed person, taking a pen and writing with your left hand will seem awkward even if there is nothing wrong in it. Therefore, you need not worry or feel bad about it.
4. Schedule breaks, rewards and treats
It is important to reward yourself when you do something good. Acknowledging yourself can motivate and strengthen you to follow the same and eliminate negative things. Rewards can be very simple things like having an ice-cream, going out for films, having dinner from outside etc. Remember to reward yourself with positive things and not negative things like alcohol or smoking.
- Forgive yourself and move forward
We all are human beings and there can be mistakes coming from our part. Therefore, it is important to forgive yourself and move forward in life. Understand that failures and mistakes are just temporary. It becomes permanent only when you accept failure or give up things. Don’t think about the past, instead live in the present and work for your future. This can help make you self-disciplined.
It is important to develop self-discipline as it motivates and helps us to do the right things. When we have self-discipline, we can easily face any challenges that come our way with self-control and determination. Self-discipline also helps to develop healthy habits and influences the way we think and act in a particular situation. Discipline forced upon you does not help you in any way, instead it has to be developed within you to make changes in life.
