Habits are something that is automatic and does not require so much mental effort to take an action. It is the habits that shape our behavior. It is important to have good habits that drive our actions to fulfill our goals. The book The Power of Habit focuses on the importance to develop good habits and how that can have positive impacts on our life. You can develop a good understanding about habits by looking at the points below.
- The three- part loop structure of habit
When an action is repeated several times, there develops an automatic routine which is called “chunking” and it is the core of any habit. It is said that 40% of the actions that we daily perform are habit- based. Habit can be divided into a three-part loop.
- Cue-It is spark or a stimulus created in the mind
- Routine-It includes your actions and thoughts at a particular time
- Reward-It is a feeling of success or accomplishment2.Habits create craving
It may be difficult for us to give up some habits, as they create a craving in our mind .E.g. an adult may find it difficult to stop having hotel food after their job. Craving is developed as a reward for some activity that we perform. Good habits can also make us crave for something. E.g. People who exercise daily crave as it gives a sense of happiness, satisfaction and accomplishment.
- Replace routine to change habit
Sometimes, it may not possible to resist our craving for certain habits. Instead, we must redirect this craving by something else. It is said that pleasure, relaxation and companionship are the main factors that make a person addicted to alcohol. So a person must try to replace this alcohol with something that does not harm at the same time, gives him/her the pleasure.
- Develop Keystone habits
It is important to develop some particular habits called as Key stone habits because it helps to develop various other positive habits. It can make a good impact in the lifestyle of an individual. For e.g. Research study has shown that the doctors find it difficult to change the lifestyle of the patients. But when patients themselves started maintaining a food journal to have a healthy diet, various other positive habits began developing.
- Willpower as an important keystone habit
Willpower is an important habit that makes people succeed in their life. Both willpower and muscles are similar in a way that both get tired of their usage. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen your willpower and this self-control helps you to take right actions at right time.
- A need to reform the habits of organizations
In organizations, most of the people tend to mind only their business due to power, competition and various other motives. But this is dangerous in some situations like crisis or an accident. It is from tragedies or accidents that we take necessary steps to reform the habit of organizations. Therefore, it is important to have a basic understanding of everybody else’s jobs and you can use them when it is needed.
- Taking advantage of customers habits
Most companies make use of the habits of customers in their marketing strategy. E.g., while entering a supermarket, most profitable items may be displayed at the time you enter to make them catchy. This enables a company to have higher profits.
- Relationships and peer pressure can make a change
You can make a change in society with the help of relationships and peer pressure. Movements that we see generally evolve in this way. This is because a person will get support from various levels, according to their relationships and this can bring change.
- Take responsibility for changing negative habits
When we understand that we are addicted to a bad habit, decide to change it. Understand that it is only “you” who can make a difference in your habits. Slowly ,change your bad habit and replace with a positive one.
It is habits that form our personality. Habits cannot be changed easily but it is not impossible. It may take some time to make a difference. Be aware of your negative habits, and replace it with a positive one. This will enable you to have success in your life.
