WILLPOWER
WILLPOWER
Roy F.Baumeister and John Tierney
Willpower in simple terms denotes an inspiration to exert the will of the mind. It is said that successful people have strong willpower, which helps them make the right decisions at the right time. The book Willpower offers an insight to achieve our goals and challenges by developing our willpower. Now let us look at some practical steps to harness willpower.
- Willpower can cause fatigue
There is a great similarity between willpower and muscles, as both of them tire and get exhausted with their usage. We require willpower to do the simple things as well as complicated things. Willpower and decision making are linked together and each of them can make an impact on the other.
- Make your willpower stronger
Some of us think that willpower cannot be changed by a person, instead it is something with which we are born. This is not true. Willpower can be strengthened if you bring about positive changes in your character and conduct. Improving your self-control will automatically develop your willpower.
- Improve your willpower with sugar and not pleasure
It was earlier believed that willpower can be strengthened by having pleasure or relaxation activities. But this later proved false. Willpower is not connected to any leisure or pleasure seeking activities, instead it is connected to the amount of glucose that we have in our food. It is said that people suffering from Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) face greater resistance to controlling their negative feelings and emotions.
- Have clear goals to harness willpower
We use our willpower with the aim of becoinge successful. Directing willpower to achieve our goals and ambitions depends on the nature and quality of the goals. Most of the time our goals contradict each other. For e.g. People often have important goals relating to their job and family, goals which are often contradictory. Such goals are difficult to achieve due to their conflicting nature. Therefore it is important to have a clear idea about your objectives in life. Prioritising one or the other will help
- Develop different strategies together with willpower
Our willpower can be diminished if constantly used. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt different strategies and plans in order to substitute your willpower. For e.g. you can overcome your temptation by anticipating and taking precautions against it. You can also increase your strength by developing positive habits and keeping healthy relations.
- Importance of religion in increasing your willpower
Religion is an important factor that helps in developing our willpower. It is said that people who are religious have more willpower and self-control than nonreligious people. This is because religious people believe that there is some higher power watching them and therefore must lead a good life.
- Substitute self-control over self esteem
Most of us believe that self-esteem will help us to become successful. People with high self-esteem convince themselves to be more superior and better than other people. But this alone will not make you succeed. Instead you must possess self-control to regulate yourself from negative actions and behaviors and this helps you achieve your targets.
- Willpower may not help in dieting
The thought that people with good willpower will be able to do anything in life is wrong. For e.g. It is not necessary that people with willpower have the capacity to diet. This is because willpower requires some energy or glucose as mentioned before. Therefore dieting beyond a certain level is not possible even for people with strong willpower.
Therefore it is important to have strong willpower to resist temptations and to have self-control that make us determined to achieve our goals in life.
