YOUR BRAIN AT WORK
YOUR BRAIN AT WORK
–DAVID ROCK
Know your Brain:
Knowing your brain better, helps you to direct its function in the right path and thus makes you stand out of the usual crowd.
Ways to Regenerate your Brain:
- Give your brain some break – Active thoughts tend to drain all the energy that our brain naturally has, and so give it some time to rest and rejuvenate.
- Don’t stuff your brain by doing several tasks at the same time.
- Interruptions and distractions might push your brain to a ‘state of alertness’ by letting it do nothing else.
- Reserve the highest energy of your brain for the job that caters full attention, this might create a difference in the level of your performance.
- Prioritize your tasks of the day.
- Makes the tasks your routine, so that you don’t have to invest your brain each time you do it.
Stay Focused – Deal with distractions:
Distractions can be both internal and external but dealing with it is a real challenge. Distractions cannot be easily overcome by refusing to accept the mere thought of it. One simple way to deal with distraction is “Vetoing”.
Vetoing:
It is nothing but the sheer willingness to stop an action that causes distraction.
Self-Control:
Self- Control is much needed in handling distractions but it cannot be controlled over all the time. Moreover, self- control can fatigue by the mere use of it.
Ways to Focus Better:
- Fix a Deadline.
- Try exploring new and interesting things.
- Always stay with interest and alertness.
- Try imagining the consequence of crossing the deadline.
- When you get too many thoughts, write them down.
- Take a relaxing walk.
Norepinephrine, a chemical that is secreted in the body to induce alertness;
Dopamine, a chemical that is secreted in the body to induce interest.
These chemicals when secreted at a balanced level help you focus much better, but when either of it drops or raises it might distort your focus.
Insight:
Most of the time when you face a ‘mental impasse’, all that you help you out of the deadlock is an insight. Though insight is seen to be a product of logical reasoning, it does not necessarily be arrived in that way. Insight happens when your conscious mind is not used, as insights are from the unconscious mind.
Ways to arrive at an insight:
- Relax and try not to think too much about the problem that has to be solved.
- Read it allowed as it makes your thinking clear and objective.
Mindfulness – Best way to find Focus:
Mindfulness, the art of experiencing the present more often helps you structure your brain and in turn, helps you gain better focus.
Ways to practice mindfulness:
- Observe your own thinking.
- Focus more on your sensory experience and stimuli. (at least for 10 seconds or so)
- Enjoy whatever you’re doing at the moment (present)
‘Reappraisal’- Take control of your Emotions:
At times we tend to lose control over our emotions when we experience uncertainty and when we are supposedly not able to handle it. ‘Reappraisal’ is one way to get over this situation. Reappraisal is nothing but choosing to view a situation with a different perspective.
Ways to achieve Reappraisal:
- Get over appraisal, that arises due to lack of control and autonomy.
- Acknowledge yourself with a sense of certainty.
Regulate your Expectations:
Expectations and its consequence play a key role in deciding the mood of someone’s day and so have to regulated with care so that we don’t put ourselves into pain.
Ways to Regulate Expectations:
- Pay attention to your expectations.
- Always have your expectations low.
When you have your expectations low, you might feel okay even if it not happens and suppose if it happens when your expectation is low it will create great joy in you like something you never expected happened.
- Never have your expectations high.
Reward your brain:
1.Relatedness and fairness:
Being socially connected and being treated fairly is said to reduce the stress level that a normal person goes through and thus helps in refreshing the brain to make better plans and decisions. Moreover, a study says that when we socialize with people our brain releases neural networks that are the basic necessities of our survival.
2.Increase in Status:
It’s a normal phenomenon that we tend to have a positive emotional response when we find ourselves superior to others and this makes us think better as this feeling of being superior over the other secretes dopamine. At times you can also trick your brain by trying to be superior to yourself.
3.Never give feedback instead induce their insight:
When you try giving someone feedback with the intention to change their thinking you’re never going to succeed, instead guide them through the process, this will not only induce their insight but also makes them feel better about their selves.
