- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven states: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm al-Qaiwain, Fujairah, Ajman and Ra’s al-Khaimah.
- Four-fifths of the UAE is desert.
- Each emirate is governed by a ruler; together, they jointly form the Federal Supreme Council. One of the rulers serves as the President of the UAE.
- The UAE also has the distinction of hosting the largest number of Indian migrants at 3.31 million.
Why in News?
- The oil-rich United Arab Emirates announced that it has connected its Barakah nuclear power plant to the national grid.
- It marks the Arab world’s first nuclear energy plant.
- The Gulf country of nearly 10 million is the newest member of a group of now 31 countries running nuclear power operations. It’s also the first new country to launch a nuclear power plant in three decades, the last being China in 1990.
- Built and run by a joint venture with Korea Electric Power Corp., the Barakah plant will increase production gradually until reaching full capacity within months.
