KEY FINDINGS
- The Forest Declaration Assessment 2025 warns that global forest health remains in crisis, and countries are off-track in meeting the goal to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030.
- Global deforestation: Reached 1 million ha in 2024, exceeding the annual target of 5 million ha.
- The world is 63% off track toward halting deforestation by 2030.
- Agriculture (86%) remains the largest driver of forest loss — led by oil palm, cocoa, rubber, orchards, and pastureland.
- Forest degradation soared to 8 million ha (2024), exceeding the 2030 target by 235%.
- Wildfires are major contributors to degradation; Amazon Basin hit hardest, emitting 791 million tonnes of CO₂ in 2024.
- Mining pressure rising: 77% of global mines are within 50 km of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs); forest loss in KBAs rose by 47%.
- Illegal deforestation: Estimated 61–94% of tropical agricultural deforestation is illegal.
- Indigenous Peoples’ rights: Only 13% of customary forest lands formally recognised.
