Deep Ocean Mission
About the Mission
- With a view to explore deep ocean for resources and develop deep sea technologies for sustainable use of ocean resources, the Government of India launched the Deep Ocean Mission as a central sector scheme in 2021.
- The initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in collaboration with ISRO, DRDO, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Indian Navy.
- The entire initiative is based on indigenous technology, developed and manufactured entirely in India, showcasing the nation’s self-reliance in cutting-edge science.
Major Components of the Mission:
- Development of Technologies for Deep Sea Mining, and Manned Submersible
- Under this component, a manned submersible will be developed to carry 3 people to a depth of 6000 metres in the ocean.
- Development of Ocean Climate Change Advisory Services
- Technological innovations for exploration and conservation of deep-sea biodiversity
- Deep Ocean Survey and Exploration
- Energy and freshwater from the Ocean
- Advanced Marine Station for Ocean Biology.
